There is a lie that we tend to believe. This lie tells us that we choose our worth and we are justified in leaving anyone behind that doesn’t recognize it. That we can dictate our path, depend on the stars for guidance, even. We give ourselves permission to be entirely self absorbed, without care for who is left in the wake.

We are constantly searching for something more. Something to latch on to and give us a sense of worth. Something to show the world so that people might bow down to us. But what if there’s a different way? A way that doesn’t come naturally to us? A way that seeks to put the wellbeing of others far before our own? A way that looks entirely different from everyone else? A way that is satisfying, fulfilling, unending? This is the way of Christ. The most selfless, loving, merciful man that ever walked the earth. Of course, He was more than a man. He was God in the flesh. He had come to dwell among the people. His creation. Why did He do such a thing? Was it so that we might have a moral standard to look up to? It was actually far more than that. For He knew that we (all of humanity) were striving after something. Eternally thirsty for a satisfying drink; one that might fill our bellies so that we might not thirst again. He came to fulfill that longing. He came as a sacrificial Lamb, taking upon Himself the wrath that we deserve. And in exchange, He gives us joy unending; fulfillment in selflessness; a cup that can not be emptied. He gives us Himself. He gives us a promise that there is more to this life than striving after one’s own heart. You need only to know that you are a sinner, both by birth and by choice. You are eternally separate from God and unable to do anything about it. That’s where Jesus comes in. Believe upon Him. Forsake the belief that you know best. Be fulfilled in Christ. You will find that life tastes sweeter knowing your Savior. You can be content to go about your life as unnoticed and ordinary by the world’s standards, but known and loved by your Creator. You can be free.
