My second birth

It was the morning of November 9th, 2021. I was 40+2, but I had gone 8 days over with my first so I was expecting the same with this one. I woke up at 5 to go to the bathroom and noticed a few contractions. With my first baby, my water broke before I had ever even felt a contraction all pregnancy! So I was anxious to see how long I would labor with this one. I went back upstairs to snuggle my little boy, and the contractions continued until I couldn’t lay down anymore. At about 7am, I called my midwife and let her know that I was having contractions, they were consistent but I was able to talk through them. She went ahead and sent a midwife over to check me and see how I was progressing. The midwife arrived around 8am with my mom and sister arriving shortly after. I specifically remember the midwife asking me how my contractions were. I told her very plainly, “they suck”, and she said “that’s what we like to hear!” She checked me and I was at a 6! Yay! We were having a baby today.
I went back and forth on having a water birth but I decided I really didn’t want to mess with filling the birth pool, so I hopped in the tub. My husband kept a rotation of pots and a kettle going to keep the water warm. He was a great doula!! I labored in that for a while until I wasn’t very comfortable anymore. My midwives came in and suggested I walk around for a minute, so I got out and walked into my living room. I had one contraction in there while standing up and it was so painful that I got down on my hands and knees quickly to relax. Shortly after that, I made my way into the playroom where I knelt down and moved quickly into transition. After the FER kicked in, I was completely at the mercy of my body and my baby. After only a few big contractions, baby’s head was born, and his body slipped out almost immediately after. It was done!! Phew. I turned around and the midwife handed baby over to me so we could check gender. It was a boy!! Another boy. We were so excited. It was 10:12am, 5 hours after my labor started.
The placenta was delivered shortly after, and they helped move me to my bed where my fresh little baby got to snuggle on my chest and try his hand at nursing for the first time. It was a time of peace, wonder, and excitement. There weren’t a million hands touching and rubbing my baby, there was no rushing around or chaos. It was quiet and respectful as we all took in with awe this little life that had been given to us. What a rush!
